THE CALLUNA HOSTEL Fort William |
Here are some preview pictures of the Calluna Hostel in Fort William.
The Calluna
is in walking distance of the centre of town. A number of highland walks can be started
from the door step. Walking and mountain climbing, are the major attractions which put Fort William
on the holiday map. But there are also many other interesting things to do. Fancy boat trips to the
"Isles" and scenic rail jouneys which count among the World's Greatest Rail Journeys - not your
ordinary commute!
The hostel itself is divided into five flats or "houses", each with its own kitchen and
living room, and accomodating not more than eight people. Bedding is provided, so there is
no hassle about lugging your own sheets, pillows, blankets and duvets! It's meant to be a
holiday after all!
Wi Fi is available - so bring your netbook (compact and light-weight) to get the very latest local updates.
Oh ... and there is an indoor climbing wall - complete with bouncy floor - to give you
a warm up after a day on the mountains.
The order in which I have placed the following items may seem a tad unusual. However, for social and location reasons confidence about the quality of the base for exploring the region is essential, and the Calluna is certainly an excellent place to stay. The next thing is of course what the region has to offer, and Fort William is very much worth a visit - preferably several visits! You will also find that travel to Fort William is actually very straight forward.
The Calluna is in easy walking distance of the centre of town. It is on a slope overlooking Loch Linnhe - a sea loch. A number of Highland walks (e.g. along the West Highland Way) can be started from the door step. Ben Nevis is also very close. Incidentally, in case you are wondering, "Calluna" is the botanical name for heather, a plant with very well known associations with Scotland! (However, I hope my thistles in the header also give an immediate Scottish flavour!)

The Calluna is run by Alan and Sue Kimber, who are very much into outdoor pursuits and so have a good understanding of what their visitors are looking for regarding inexpensive yet dependable acccomodation. You can access their web site by clicking on their visiting card below. I also visited Fort William this year (2011) and was amazed at how much there is to do here - in all weathers! Why not have a look at some of my experiences by clicking on my picture of Loch Shiel where Bonnie Prince Charlie landed many moons ago.
There are many ways of getting to Fort William from London. I think the easiest and most convenient way is the overnight sleeper from London Euston. However other journeys with some combination of rail, air and road are of course possible to suit your preferences. Many ways of belling the cat!
