Purpose of these Notes

Spread throughout these pages there may be certain items to which you may wish to refer. Since these may only appear in a few places, I have attempted to collect them on one page for your convenience.

Cameras

As the years advance, so does technology. Hopefully one's familiarity with the artistic and technical aspects of photography also advance. The table below shows, for reference, the cameras I used in the years relevant to these web pages. The resolution in Pixels and Mega Pixels (MP) gives one aspect of the technical capabilities of a camera. Range of focal lengths, adaptation to light conditions and shutter speed are yet further relevant aspects.



Abbreviations & Acronyms

Many abbreviations and acronyms will be familiar to most of us. However, a few might be shrouded in mystery, such as the meaning of some of the London Bus types - for example "RT". For your convenience, I have listed some abbreviations here.



Jazz Trains

Liverpool Street's suburban service was at one time the most intensively operated service in the world. The trains were known as Jazz Trains - probably "Jazz" to reflect a popular and lively musical trend of the day. The work to introduce these fast turnround commuter services was completed in 1920.

Liverpool Street Station was - and is - constrained by having only six access tracks or roads (nominally 3 in and 3 out). Electrification was regarded as too costly at the time. However, by looking closely at the following bulleted points below, commuter capacity is said to have been increased by well over 50%. The relevant factors were:

There seems to be a paucity of references on Jazz Trains, but the following link merits investigation.



Mystery

A  frequent and much liked guest locomotive on the EOR is "Metropolitan Number 1". It has also come with an interesting "Mystery Ticket". For further details, do have a look at this link.
